■ INFORMATION
The Kilumwe Farmers Cooperative was founded in 1950 when farmers planted their first coffee trees, and in 1957 100 farmers founded the Kebote Factory. The cooperative has three wet mills, Kebote, Kianjuki and Nga Indesia, with a total membership of 4,500.
The cooperative is located in Makengi district, Runyenges County, Embu County, about 150km north of Nairobi, on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya. Kebote Wet Mill's current production is 350,000kg. There are about 100,000 coffee trees, and the Kirumwe Farmers Cooperative as a whole has about 300,000 coffee trees.
In Kebote, the cherries are taken to the wet mill on the same day they are picked. In the wet mill, the cherries are sorted before being pulped, and the red ripe cherries are separated from unripe, overripe and foreign objects. The parchment is then fermented and washed. Clean river water is used for processing, which is recirculated before being discarded in a percolation pit. Sun drying takes place before sending the coffee beans to the dry mill for secondary processing.
The dried parchment is ground and bagged by Highlands Coffee Mills and transported to a green coffee warehouse in Nairobi, from where it is sold to the Nairobi Central Auction or directly to overseas buyers.
