■ INFORMATION
In Ethiopia, a common method of coffee cultivation is known as "garden coffee." Many of the farmers in the village of Chelbesa also grow coffee in their own gardens.
Yirgacheffe boasts an unshakable presence in the specialty coffee market. This selection comes from the village of Chelbesa, a region with a global reputation for producing high-quality coffee.
In 2019, the Ethiopian exporter SNAP COFFEE, captivated by the quality of coffee in this region, built a washing station in a small hamlet called Danchie within Chelbesa. Today, approximately 1,300 local coffee farmers deliver their high-quality coffee cherries to this station.
The Chelbesa village washing station is located deep in the mountains at an altitude of over 1,950 meters. It is rare to find a washing station at such a high elevation.
It gets cold enough here that long sleeves are needed in the mornings and evenings. Mornings are misty, and temperatures rarely rise above 25°C even during the day. In this cool climate, the coffee cherries dry slowly on African beds while basking in the sunlight, allowing the sugar content to concentrate within the cherry. This slow, careful process results in a coffee with a one-of-a-kind flavor profile that balances brightness and sweetness.
SNAP SPECIALTY was founded in 2008 and was originally involved in electronics assembly and software development. Founder Negusse Weldyes wanted to build a business that would benefit his home country of Ethiopia, and he was particularly passionate about coffee, the nation's primary industry.
Today, in addition to the washing station in Chelbesa, the company operates five other processing facilities, delivering unique Ethiopian coffee to the world.
