■ INFORMATION
Roger Urena has been involved in coffee farming since he was young. His parents and grandparents were also coffee farmers and they taught him how to work the land. In his own words, growing coffee in the Taraz region is an activity that has been in his family for many years and he believes it will provide a good source of income and growth for his family.

From an early age, Roger was expected to work, helping his father with dairy and coffee farming activities while continuing his studies and graduating from high school. However, at the age of 15, he started working in the coffee business himself, starting with coffee plants and then his first coffee plantation.
In 1987, Roger went to the United States to work and save money, which allowed him to raise the capital he needed to invest in his hometown and grow his coffee farm. However, a few years later, the prices offered by the cooperatives were no longer sustainable, so he decided to process his own cherries in a micromill in Santa Teresa.

The main farm, Santa Teresa, was acquired by Roger 10 years ago and is located at an altitude between 1900 and 2050 meters. It has a total area of 60 hectares, but only 10 hectares are planted to coffee. Most of the land is protected forest. Roger chose the perfect site to build the wet mill. It is located on a slope where the afternoon sun is gentle and the clouds move quickly. The farm is equipped with a Penagos pulping machine, raised beds in a greenhouse, a concrete patio, a mechanical dryer and a warehouse. It is a complete operation.

Roger decided early on to plant different varieties because at the time there weren't many farmers in Costa Rica planting different coffee varieties other than Catuai and Caturra. He understood the impact that the variety had on the cup and thought there was a market for more exotic and different varieties. So he grows different varieties such as Sudan Lume, Ethiopian varieties, Pacamara, Villalobos, Bourbon, Geisha, SL-28, Tipica Mehorado, and Catuai.
