■ Information
This lot was purchased from a green bean importer called 'Nordic Approach', which is said to be a pioneer in specialty coffee and is based in Oslo, Norway in Northern Europe.
Dromina is a cooperative located in Agaro, Jimma, southwest Ethiopia, established in 2011. Since its establishment, Nordic Approach has been purchasing unique flavors that cannot be found anywhere else.
Before the establishment of the agricultural cooperative, the region mainly produced low quality natural coffee, which was sold as Jimma Grade 5 (the lowest priced coffee).
These efforts have made the farmers who belong to the collective economically profitable and have helped the region produce many award-winning coffees.
The cherries are sold by hundreds of members, plus nearby non-member farmers. Members receive a second payment after the coffee is processed and graded for quality.
This region also has an excellent support system, and with the support of an organization called Technoserve, the company has succeeded in producing high-quality coffee from its first year of operation, by setting up a washing station, switching to environmentally friendly sustainable farming methods, increasing production of premium quality coffee, and introducing a traceability system for each lot.
Since the beginning, Ecopulpers have been used to remove coffee pulp using only 10-20% of the water used by traditional machines, and the removed pulp is used as compost. Wastewater flows through a filtering vetiver grass wetland, and the remaining wastewater is sent to a water treatment system to ensure that the wastewater is filtered without returning to the soil.
